Watch: Shashi Tharoor pulls down Churchill from pedestal,
calls him 'worse than genocidal dictators'

Shashi Thaoor launched into a forceful takedown of
Winston Churchill's role in the Bengal famine at TV show.

Shashi Tharoor is one of the strongest critics of the
empire, reminding modern-day Britain of its colonial
excesses. (Pradeep Gaur/Mint)

Congress MP and writer Shashi Tharoor has compared
British leader Winston Churchill to some of the "worst
genocidal dictators of 20th century" for orchestrating
the 1943 Bengal famine that claimed more than 2 million
lives.

Tharoor was a panelist at ABC's Q&A, a debate show
broadcast from the Melbourne writer's festival,
discussing the legacies of colonialism among other
things. When the show's host asked Tharoor about his
views on Churchill, the Indian politician explained how
Britain's wartime prime minister diverted grain to
English shores despite knowing that people were dying.

Tharoor emphatically demolished the argument that
Churchill was unaware of the millions of people starving.
He recounted how the British PM's callous response was to
write on the side of a file, 'Why hasn't Gandhi died
yet?"

Over 2.1 million died in the Bengal famine, but later
estimates suggest that the death toll was much, much
higher. In recent years, scholarship and historical
accounts have focussed on Churchill's direct role in
worsening the famine and causing starvation and deaths.

"This is the man the British want us to hail as an
apostle of freedom and democracy, when he has as much
blood on his hands as some of the worst genocidal
dictators of the 20th century," said Tharoor.

Churchill did to Bengal what Stalin did to Ukraine.

o His bombing of civilian targets in Germany was a war
crime by any standard. It was the reason why Goering was

o When the British finally figured that they would not
be able to continue with their crimes, they destroyed
damning records and archives as a part of 'operation

o In return for all these crimes against humanity, what

this oppression to hundreds of millions in India and

People who deny this peremptorily are as bad as holocaust

Or a version of '... yeah it happened... But Hitler was a

the abomination that was the Raj.

He's not wrong. Sadly there's complete ignorance and
uneducatedness within the UK/and amongst the Brits when
it comes to the British Empire and its crimes against
humanity etc, Churchill included(he was the voted the
"greatest Briton" by the public, which says it all) . But
its not surprising. I mean ive always found it strange
how such an integral and still very relevant part of
British and indeed world history & wealth of past,
present & future etc is hardly taught in our schools. Its
as if the powers that be dont want the people to know,
and they'd rather keep us dumb and ignorant. Now the
question you have to ask yourself is why is that?.
Knowledge is power as the saying goes.

But you know I think its pretty telling that when
something about the dark side and crimes against the
world & humanity committed by the British Empire come out
so many people get real defensive or enter a whataboutery
mode(oh but we brought democracy, railways etc as if if
it was some aultristic thing and not a means to an end(ie
the easier transportation of resources, ie more efficent
raping and pilliging of the country. And surely any good
that came from the Empire cannot ever make up for the
uncountable genocides and sheer destruction brought upon
humanity and countless nations many of whom have yet to
recover and are still being set back from progress by neo
colonialism). It clearly strikes a nerve for many of my
fellow Brits. That says it all.

I also find it ironic how we Brits are quick to never let
Germany forget about its crimes, or how we're quick to
chastise and have a go at Japan for being so historicaly
revisionist, ignorant of thier past attrocities and not
teaching thier young people about thier country's crimes
against humanity( i mean the British Empire apart from
the Slave Trade and a little bit on the East India
Company(i was fortunate enough to learn about the British
Colonialism in Australia too though. I had a great
history teacher in primary school & secondary school)...
for the most part though the rest, all the atrocities are
quetly swept under the rug/hardly touched upon despite
the British empire still being in some responsible for
many of the things happening today in the post-colonial
world Its all ignored. We spends ages on ww2 n the Nazis
though. Many schools are like this. That explains why so
many are ignorant cuz we're just not taught about it)
etc... When in many ways we're no different to that
despite pretentions otherwise. We're very selective when
it comes to the British Empire and the unsavoury aspects
and we shouldn't be so imo.

If we never learn from history its bound to repeat
itself. As we are currently seeing.

indeed have continued!
o When the British finally figured that they would not
be able to continue with their crimes, they destroyed
damning records and archives as a part of 'operation
legacy'. What is now unearthed by Indians and fair minded
historians is only a fraction of what actually happened.
o In return for all these crimes against humanity, what
did Britain get out of him? A few speeches and the image
of 'heroic struggle' against oppression. I hate to break
it to you, but Britain and Churchill were the face of
this oppression to hundreds of millions in India and
elsewhere.
People who deny this peremptorily are as bad as holocaust
deniers. At least the jews dont have to face haughty
Germans who deny any crimes against them ever happened!
Or a version of '... yeah it happened... But Hitler was a
complex character and the reich was overall a force for

down its young by shielding them from the real history of
the abomination that was the Raj.

It was the reason why Goering was
not tried for mass bombings of civilian populations, but
instead for execution of allied airmen who were caught
after an escape attempt. In a way, Churchill did what we
accuse Saddam of doing, bombing civilian populations.
o He was an unabashed racist.
o His war time strategy of pottering about in the
Mediterranean was a disaster and a partial cause for the
iron curtain that descended over Europe in the decades to
come.
o He wanted Colonialism to continue for ever, and were
it not for the American administration's policies would
