The NFL (National Football League)has existed under that name since 1922.

Teams were first required to stand during the anthem in 2009 [97 years later].

This unprecedented requirement was PAID FOR. The US Department of Defense paid the NFL $5.4 million between 2011 and 2014, and the National Guard paid] $6.7 million between 2013 and 2015 to stage such patriotic ceremonies.

NBC broadcasters pointed this out.

Yesterday Britain's Daily Telegraph reported that Donald Trump threw his toys out of the pram, threatening to revoke NBC's broadcasting licence because of such "fake news" that embarrassed him.

Background stuff for UK young 'uns reading this:
We used to scarper out of the Odeon 60 years ago at the end of a flick because the horrible strains of the national anthem would begin as the lights went up.

My dear old muvver doted so much on the queen that, if she were [rarely] awake before the BBC signed off at night, she would stand up while the Beeb played the anthem.

Malcolm Muggeridge once pointed out that "imperialism" became a conscious deliberate concept only when the empire was beginning to dissolve; just as "health" topics are most avidly discussed by the sick.

A nation that has tantrums over somebody ignoring the state anthem is a state on the way out.

As a Teenager I refused to stand up for God Save the Queen not because I objected to the Queen but becasue I objected to God.

Yes but we did have to get a good place in the queue for the last bus at 10 o'clock.

Now there was a man. A Red, White and Blue socialist. There are not many of them left.I'll never forget his interview with Brendan Behan who was a pissed as a newt. It's the only time old Malcom was lost for words!

It's important. It reminds us who we are (or were) I'll bet your old mum hung the union flag out of the window on VJ day too, as well as for the Coronation 8 years later.

It tried to remind me of the lousy class-ridden system under which my family subsisted; indeed it DID remind me every time my ears could not duck the noise, which I suppose was a kind of vaccination, 'thank heavings Mister Pickwick'.
