"Russia is an undeniably great nation and people. But its gross
domestic product is no larger than that of Italy and far smaller than
the UK’s.

Those outline figures do not do justice to the appalling inefficiency
of Russia’s economy, mired in corruption which would disgrace any
tin-pot sub-Saharan dictatorship.

The result, as one might expect, is extreme levels of inequality and
poverty."

Russia exports more Polonium-210 and Sarin than any other nation. That should
help.

they certainly seem to be trading freely with the mass murdering
socialist of damascus...

but what else do they have on offer?

they are heading towards failed state conditions which make them
particularly dangerous esp when controlled by a person who looks
more like a mafia don than a normal statesman...

i'm seeing idiots saying that boycotting football would be wrong,
whereas it is obvious that putin is desperate to get legitimacy
through the like of olympics, football and other bread and
circuses displays
he obviously cares deeply about such immature posturing
whatever sane people may thing of such displays

Russia hasn't yet lost its cold war mentality. Dismantling Communism has had
little effect on Russia's pretensions with regard to its status as a world
power.

So, do you suggest that "efficient Italy" could cause more problems than
Russia? Is "lack of importance" caused by EU membership? ;-)

Italy is a little bit smaller, in population and area, than Russia.

Italy's GDP is about 50% larger ... someone once described Russia as "Mexico
with nukes".

Shouldn't gross domestic product be the most important?
<half-demagogy> Shame on lousy UK politician that UK is far less
influential than Russian Federation. </half-demagogy>

Have you ever counted *when* GDP of China should be greater than US GDP?

I do not like Putin (understatement). Sometime post-Putin Russia _may_
became an ally even if governed by president chosen by Putin.
It makes me suggest making clear difference between disliking Putin and
disliking Russia, dossing dislike _for Russia itself_ carefully.
It is not policy "no matter what Putin will do".
