"We note in Appendix 1 that a 23% VAT on education in Greece (in
apparent contravention of EU law) caused, according to The
Economist,17 “general mayhem” for exactly the reasons we outline
here: migration into the overburdened state sector, school closures,
job losses, tax avoidance, and a “gap between theory and practice”.
The implementation was scrutinised in the European Parliament,
where it was noted as “likely to cause financial hardship to thousands
of families”.18 Any review of the effect of VAT seems incomplete
without mention of the Greek experience."

School Fees, Adam Smith Institute, 17/3/2024; link to 38-page pdf

this paper is a reaonable summary of the variable and inevitable
innumeracy of socialists,
driven by envy and wishful thinking over
analysis and pragmatism.....

god help britain if they elect starmer and his band of fantassts.....

Anyone who wonders why this newsgroup has gone to pot need not look much
further than idiots like Babbelard with his numerous crosspostings. Just
like at this thread for an example.

Err... he's one of the few who do actually try to keep this group
alive. You need to be complaining about the people who post off-topic
politics in other newsgroups rather than here.

I don't bother much with other newsgroups so I wouldn't know much about
that.

Surely one of the reasons for the decline in this newsgroup is the
amount of spam posted here, and multiple crossposting will only tend to
bring those idiots in.

Whether or not Babbelard helps to keep this ng alive is moot when most
of his posts are meaningless rubbish.

Yes, I have a lot of filter rules, but I only make about one new one a
month. It's under control.

That's more of a bar to new readers than a cause for existing
readers to depart. Granted that is a serious bar.

Yes, I have a lot of filter rules, but I only make about one new one a
month.
I have quite few and doubt whether I have changed them even once
a year. I currently have:

one rule "junk if newsgroups contains alt"
two rules of form "junk if subject contains ..."
six rules targeting specific spamming posters
three rules targeting specific other headers

About one spam message per month gets through; the only non-spam poster
who gets blocked seems to be Abelard when he cross-posts to alt groups
[plus, of course, any serious replies similarly cross-posted].

Perhaps we could encourage [eg] "uk.l.m" posters to migrate here
if there was a way of setting them up with a standard KF which would have
to be kept secret[-ish] from the spammers. But there isn't. Another
might be to cross-post between serious[-ish] groups when they start
talking about Brexit or whatever.

I have pretty much the same, I block alt for just ukpm, that is my only
specific ukpm filter.

I block about the same numbers as you in my universal filter. I also
block soc.*,talk.*,can.*,sac.* universally.

abelard's original post didn't make it through my filter.

The ulm crowd don't want to post here. They didn't even want a moderated
politics group.

The thing that depresses me is not that usenet is dying, but that there
is no similar/suitable replacement forums.

It would be good to have an open, distributed, anonymous, uncensored
forums, but it would also need some kind of community reputation filtering.

I don't think so.

I'm puzzled as to why you defend him. I regard you as one of the more
intelligent posters here, but Babbelard as an absolute moron - as well
as being a very dodgy character to boot.

His mate, that other creep, Nugent is about the same.

LOL!

What a pity it is that you can't bothered to assemble actual valid
arguments for use in discussion and have to rely upon ad-homs (like the
liberal left does).

I'm being charitable enough in the first instance to assume that you
could do so if you tried.

What is wrong with the premise that a threatened policy has been shown
to have had unintended and undesirable effects in a territory where it
has already been enacted and implemented?
