"Martin Gore [songwriter for DM] was pretty scathing of the Live Aid
event: 'If these bands really care so much, they should just donate the
money and let that be it. Why can't they do it without all the
surrounding hype?'
To this day the band have refused to do Live Aid-type benefit festivals
or events, which they view as manipulating people's good intentions for
the sake of television exposure."

If Depeche Mode had been on the bill I might actually have watched
part of Live8..

Because their fame and connections are worth more than their money.
Anonymous donations of musicians money would result in just that
amount of cash. Anonymous donations of famous musicians money AND
public donations of time, expertise and public relations work result
in the first sum of money PLUS the sum of donations from previously
unengaged members of the public. They just got more the Live Aid way!

I wonder if that's the same reason Skinny Puppy and Sol Invictus
weren't on the bill?
